Unit 2: Tackling Trouble: Assessment-Based Small Group Work

I am happy to be joining a few other teachers/bloggers in this fun reading adventure. We are reading A Curricular Plan For The Reading Workshop Grade 2

I am posting about Unit 2: Enjoy
This chapter should take place in October in the classroom. We need to have students work on hard words and tricky parts of books at the same time.

First we need to take a spelling inventory for each child and do a running record. This will help us build our lessons that best fit each child. For example you might have a student who is fluent in a level h but not a level k so you will need to fill this students bag with good fit books and build that students confidence with the different strategies given below.

I like the advice and strategies this book gives.  Second graders should be reading at levels IJk. However they may be a bit rusty ftom the summer fun. Therefore this book gives good examples to help us teach everyone at there level of need using different strategies.

It is divided into easy to use sections/strategies.
I'll
list a few examples for each part but hope you read the book for more detail.

Part One: Readers Notice and Tackle Tricky Parts: Chunking Parts of Words, Drawing on Meaning as Well as Phonics.
-play guess the covered word and teach endings like (ed, ing)

Part Two: Readers Read Known Words in a Snap and Check to Make Sure New Words Make Sense - use word rings or play I spy ____ (a word) with a partner

Part Three: Readers Fix Our Reading When We Make a Mistake
-conferencing one on one or small group with children who need help on a certain strategy together

Part Four: Readers Make Sure That We Don’t Just Read the Words, We Understand Them—and Then We Read More and More.
-collect words or use synonyms for unknown words

This book gives great ideas to help us meet the needs of all kids and the common core.

This book is a great resource to help
struggling readers. When I get in a hurry I need quick and easy to use strategies and that is what I find in this book. Hands on experiences for the teacher to try with students.

The author reminds us to use running records with all of the other great strategies.

These strategies work well for any grade level including Kindergarten. I plan to increase reading time, conferencing, small group instruction. I plan to use everything I have learned; since students come with different needs. This chapter will help guide my instruction.

  1. I am so enjoying reading this book. In this unit, I really like how the author explains we as teachers should question our students in a way that makes students understand how to self monitor their own reading. I feel that it it very important for students to understand that when they are reading it is not just about 'sounding out" words. Students have to be able to focus on the meaning of the text too. I loved reading Unit Two and I can't wait to read the next section!

    1. Crystal,

I took this away from the reading as well...don't just sound out the word, teach students to understand the meaning in context as well. I think it is all too easy to teach our students to attack words by simply sounding them out, but where is the true meaning in that?

  2. This book keeps me reading from page to page. I walk away with so much that I have just started keeping a notebook with my notes to review later. This chapter is all about word attack, or what the author calls "word-solving strategies". She explains the importance of the Primary Spelling Inventory (PSI) mentioned in Unit 1 as a guideline to understand which phonics work students need in order to further their reading levels.

Part one of this unit really hit home for me. The author discusses the importance of NOTICING the bumps in the road while students are reading. Designing a unit where students understand how important it is to recognize reading hurdles and how to jump over them will lead to their overall reading success.

Thank you for taking the time to engage with the book and post your take-aways from the book. I can't wait for Unit 3 with Kelsey at Aloha to 2nd on Monday! :)
