I feel like this book is one of the best resources I have read in awhile. This chapter is all about word attack, or what the author calls "word-solving strategies". She explains the importance of the Primary Spelling Inventory (PSI) mentioned in Unit 1 as a guideline to understand which phonics work students need in order to further their reading levels.

Part one of this unit really hit home for me. The author discusses the importance of NOTICING the bumps in the road while students are reading. Designing a unit where students understand how important it is to recognize reading hurdles and how to jump over them will lead to their overall reading success.

Thank you for taking the time to engage with the book and post your take-aways from the book. I can't wait for Unit 3 with Kelsey at Aloha to 2nd on Monday! :)The Sunny Side of Second Gradehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18018270398257725623noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7072545586803156457.post-21220263632961793012015-06-26T01:12:43.623-07:002015-06-26T01:12:43.623-07:00Crystal,

I think it is all too easy to teach our students to attack words by simply sounding them out, but where is the true meaning in that?

AmberThe Sunny Side of Second Gradehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18018270398257725623noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7072545586803156457.post-69292888689863462172015-06-25T17:04:52.387-07:002015-06-25T17:04:52.387-07:00I am so enjoying reading this book. In this unit, I really like how the author explains we as teachers should question our students in a way that makes students understand how to self monitor their own reading. I feel that it it very important for students to understand that when they are reading it is not just about 'sounding out" words. Students have to be able to focus on the meaning of the text too. I loved reading Unit Two and I can't wait to read the next section!Mrs. Wyatt's Wise Owl Teacher Creationshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00873792524684158118noreply@blogger.com
