Unit 2: Tackling Trouble: Assessment-Based Small Group Work

I am happy to be joining a few other teachers/bloggers in this fun reading adventure. We are reading A Curricular Plan For The Reading Workshop Grade 2

I am posting about Unit 2: Enjoy
This chapter should take place in October in the classroom. We need to have students work on hard words and tricky parts of books at the same time.

First we need to take a spelling inventory for each child and do a running record. This will help us build our lessons that best fit each child. For example you might have a student who is fluent in a level h but not a level k so you will need to fill this students bag with good fit books and build that students confidence with the different strategies given below.

I like the advice and strategies this book gives.  Second graders should be reading at levels IJk. However they may be a bit rusty ftom the summer fun. Therefore this book gives good examples to help us teach everyone at there level of need using different strategies.

It is divided into easy to use sections/strategies.
I'll
list a few examples for each part but hope you read the book for more detail.

Part One: Readers Notice and Tackle Tricky Parts: Chunking Parts of Words, Drawing on Meaning as Well as Phonics.
-play guess the covered word and teach endings like (ed, ing)

Part Two: Readers Read Known Words in a Snap and Check to Make Sure New Words Make Sense - use word rings or play I spy ____ (a word) with a partner

Part Three: Readers Fix Our Reading When We Make a Mistake
-conferencing one on one or small group with children who need help on a certain strategy together

Part Four: Readers Make Sure That We Don’t Just Read the Words, We Understand Them—and Then We Read More and More.
-collect words or use synonyms for unknown words

This book gives great ideas to help us meet the needs of all kids and the common core.

This book is a great resource to help
struggling readers. When I get in a hurry I need quick and easy to use strategies and that is what I find in this book. Hands on experiences for the teacher to try with students.

The author reminds us to use running records with all of the other great strategies.

These strategies work well for any grade level including Kindergarten. I plan to increase reading time, conferencing, small group instruction. I plan to use everything I have learned; since students come with different needs. This chapter will help guide my instruction.

Reading Comprehension Passages + Dictation Booklets {Kinders G1 ELL/ESL}

She recently updated the product and added the same passages with the font 'Print Clearly' as an option.

I like how this packet helps with reading comprehension skills. We completed this passage whole class since we are just starting but eventually it can be done individually.

We had fun reading and answering the questions together.

Supports the following Kindergarten and First Grade standards:

Common Core Standard ELA-Literacy.RL.1.1 - Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
Common Core Standard ELA-Literacy.RL.K.1 -With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details in a text.

How to use this pack:

Section 1 Reading Passages:

Each page includes 1 reading passage and questions on the right hand side. There are five stars on each page to guide students to read the passage quite a few times and color the stars as they read. Some pages include an ‘I feel’ or ‘how does the subject in the story feel?’ question where the student can identify with feelings.
Hand out the sheet and do a simple ‘listening’ task where students listen to the story and look at the picture. Ask the students a few questions about the passage, then instruct them to begin reading by themselves 9or as a guided reading group session). You can even get a group reading session going and the group can color the stars as they read.
Finally, instruct the students to swap papers and see if their partners can identify any mistakes and color the smiley faces according to how they think their partner performed in answering the passage:

This is a great packet!

Section 2 Dictation Sentence Booklets:

How to begin:
Day 1: Begin by getting the students to ‘stop & listen to the sentence’ then trace the sentence.
Day 2: Listen to the sentence and write the missing word, color the pictures.
Day 3: Listen to the sentence and write the missing word(s), color the pictures.
Day 4: Listen to the sentence and write the missing words, color the pictures.
Day 5: Listen & write the full sentence then draw a picture.

A full month of these has been included in this pack! Several title pages for the booklets have been provided for your preferred choice.
